How does the Prosthesis work?
To speak through the Voice Prosthesis device
– Take a deep breath through the hole
– Block the hole with a finger
– Try to speak
The scarves provided should be worn over the prosthesis device to prevent entry of dust particles or any foreign body. The scarf also provides a cosmetic cover to the area and gives confidence to the patient for any social appearances.
How to take care of the Voice Prosthesis
Daily Cleaning – To optimise the use of the prosthesis, the device needs to be cleaned daily at least once with the voice prosthesis brush provided in the kit. This also increases the longevity of the prosthesis.
Consuming helpful diet – Some dietary measures, like the daily intake of yoghurt or butter milk containing lactobacilli, is considered to be helpful against excessive candida (fungus) growth.
Device's Lifespan
On an average the lifespan of a prosthesis is 6-12 months, the reason being the regular wear and tear due to the use and biological colonization of the device. Also, food particles accelerate the wear and tear process.

When to consult your Doctor
- If there is a leak through the prosthesis or around the prosthesis, it causes the food particles or liquids to enter the lungs, hence causing cough. In such a situation, a doctor needs to be consulted and the prosthesis needs to be changed.
- If there is pain, discharge of the pus or foul smell at the prosthesis site, it indicates that the area around the prosthesis is infected. Treatment for the infection has to be started and if required the voice prosthesis has to be changed.
- If the voice prosthesis is misplaced in to the trachea or lungs, it is an emergency condition and needs immediate attention.
- If the prosthesis is accidentally swallowed.
- If the patient is not able to speak or have to strain a lot to speak.

- If there is leakage through the prosthesis, causing cough and aspiration.
- If there is an infection around the prosthesis site. Usually the biofilms clog the prosthesis and prevent the functioning of the prosthesis.

Instructions for Use
- For the first time use Primary insertion/Restrograde insertion
- For the replacement, use Antigrade Insertion
- For the replacement use Antigrade insertion in Narrow Stoma
